Taisho runs a ramen shop... and he's a cat. The funny thing is, he doesn't think it's strange to have a cat make and sell ramen. When you walk in to his shop, be prepared to have any ingredient or topping served in your bowl. You can follow Taisho's adventures from starting out as a cat model to making his own way to a ramen chef with his own ramen shop. You will meet a wide variety of characters along the way including Taisho's baby brothers.

Neko Ramen is not your average manga. It is actually a yonkoma (or 4-koma) which is a gag comic strip. It is sort of like short stories as each story is told in four panels starting from the top and finishing at the bottom. Although the stories are not dependent on one another, they come together to create an overal story that makes you fall in love with Taisho. With Taisho in most of his scenes is the ever faithful customer Tanaka-san. Through Tanaka-san we learn more about Taisho and his very strange life as a cat Ramen Chef. This manga really is quite clever and funny and appeals to both people who like cats and ramen. From extremely ridiculous ramen ingredients to learning about Taisho's secret past as a cat model, there are many laughs to be had. Once you start reading you will not want to stop.

The art style to Neko Ramen is rather simplistic. What really makes it fun to read are all the facial expressions. There may not be much to the backgrounds or character designs, but the facial expressions really aid the storytelling process.

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

On Friday, March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 (upgraded from 8.9) earthquake hit off the coast of Japan near the city of Sendai, which unleashed a 23-foot tsunami leaving death and disaster in its wake. In the days since we have seen the news updates from the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami to the nuclear crisis. We have also seen how the Japanese people have come together to support each other.

Manga Web Portal Coming Soon

In an effort to combat online piracy of their content, 37 Japanese manga publishers are set to launch a manga web portal sometime before the new year. The portal is tentatively being called, "J Manga Portal Site" and will distribute manga digitally from participating publishers. In addition to the digital manga, the portal will also include news and information about other titles from the publishers. Some of the 37 publishers are large publishing firms of Hakusensha, Kadakawa, Kodansha, Ohzora, Shogakukan, and Shueisha.

The initial web portal will be in beta form and purported to be available by the years end. The publishers are planning on having the public site available by March of next year. For further details see the ICv2 and Anime News Network articles.

Telling ghost stories is a favorite past time of Mai Taniyama and her friends--that is, until she meets 17 year-old Kazuya Shibuya, the man sent by Shibuya Psychic Research Center to investigate paranormal activity at a supposedly haunted school. When Mai gets caught in a dangerous situation, she is rescued by Kazuya's assistant. Saving her lands the assistant incapacitated, and Kazuya demands that Mai become his assistant instead.

While there are main plot points to this series, it is very much a collection of short stories. With Ghost Hunt you enter a world full of paranormal activiy, ghost stories, and folklore. Once you start watching, you will not want to stop!

Tokyopop In Motion

This November, Tokyopop is doing something innovative. Each Friday they will release a motion comic of one of their titles on the video site Hulu. This Friday look for the comic GYAKUSHU (rated OT for older teens and adults).

Mashiro Ichijo has a big secret to keep, but in high school, who doesn't? He manages to keep it hidden and still maintain his kendo and popularity. As time passes, it gets harder and harder to keep it up however. He lost his kendo match with Sou and his secret forces him to quit the club as the story begins. Mashiro and others have been noticing that other kids in the school have been disappearing and no one can remember quite who they were and what happened to them. When he is invited by a school nurse to a basement infirmary down a staircase that wasn’t there before, he will find out that he isn’t the only one in his school with a deep secret. The story goes into questions of identity, gender issues, conformity and relationships in a uniquely visual way.

This manga seemed a bit too far fetched and somehow gimmicky for me to really get into at first glance with its unusual love triangle. Once I started the book though, I was really upset I had only checked out the first one and had to wait another day to read more. Give it a shot and keep an open mind.

The art in After School Nightmare isn’t the best. It does start off with a few color pages which are nice looking but it isn’t the kind of book you will want to spend time going back simply to look at the pictures.

In the not so distant future, the government has created a committee to rid the populace of books that it deems unsuitable. However, there is one agency that stands up to them - the library. After a tragic incident between an armed political group and the library, it became apparent that there was a need for a military force at the library. From that time on, the war between the Media Betterment Committee and the Library Forces continued to escalate.

When Iku Kasahara finally finds the book she has been waiting years to read, it is suddenly on the MBC's confiscation list. She tries to save the book from destruction by saying she will steal it, but the MBC attempts to take it by force. She is rescued by an unknown officer in the Library Forces and from that day on she vows to join their ranks. Library Wars follows the story of Kasahara and her struggle to become a member of the Library Force. Through her bumbling and narrow scrapes, she is known to be rather impulsive, but dedicated.

What makes this series interesting is the blend of both action and romance. Library Wars is categorized as a shojo title, but there is enough action to make this interesting for the shonen fans. While the main storyline is about the war between the Library Forces and the Media Betterment Committee, the main focus of the series is the relationships between characters, especially Iku Kasahara and her commander, Atsushi Dojo. Not only that, we also are subjected to Kasahara's internal monologue about her feelings towards Dojo and others. Even with the focus on relationships, the main story is enough to keep you interested in the world of Library Wars.

The art style is not typically shojo (you can tell most of the men apart) and the action is clear and expressive. The backgrounds are well defined and make you feel that you are with the characters.

Library Wars: Love and War, Volume 1 has been nominated for YALSA's (Young Adult Library Service's Association) 2011 Great Graphic Novels for Teens.

Banned Books Week 2010 is the twenty-ninth annual celebration of the freedom to read. This freedom, not only to choose what we read, but also to select from a full array of possibilities, is firmly rooted in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Although we enjoy an increasing quantity and availability of information and reading material, we must remain vigilant to ensure that access to this material is preserved; would-be censors who continue to threaten the freedom to read come from all quarters and all political persuasions. Even if well intentioned, censors try to limit the freedom of others to choose what they read, see, or hear.

Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D Feature Rights Acquired

4Kids acquired the rights to the anime feature, Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time. The feature, which should hit US theaters in the spring of 2011, was produced in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the property. Bonds Beyond Time will have characters from three of the series. For further details check out the article from ICv2.

Pokemon: HS-Triumphant Out November 3rd

For you Pokemon gamers out there - check stores on November 3rd for the release of HS-Triumphant Expansion. Triumphant Expansion is good for those new to the game or seasoned gamers with over 100 cards available in either booster or theme decks. In the game, legendary Pokemon are paired on Legend Cards and other powerful Pokemon appear for the first time as Pokemon Prime Cards. There will be a new Special Energy card in addition to trainer, stadium, and supporter cards.

Trailer Park - Priest

Yesterday, the trailer for the movie adaptation of the manhwa Priest was released. For those of you who are not familiar with the series, it is about a faithful priest, Ivan Issacs, who accidentally resurrects Temozareal, a bloody angel of Hell. In order to correct this wrong, he sells his soul to the devil.

As with many adaptations, the movie does not follow the story as closely as some fans would like. However, it looks like it is a great story with fantastic visuals. Priest will hit theaters May 13th.

If you want to catch up on the story before the movie hits theaters next summer, why not check out the manhwa by Min-Woo Hyung coming to the Chesapeake Public Library soon.

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Names New President

According to ICv2, there have been some changes to the CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund). Larry Marder will replace Chris Powell as president, but Powell will remain on the Board of Directors. In addition to Powell, Dale Cendali, nationally recognized as a leader in the field of intellectual property, has joined the board which includes Joe Ferrara, Louise Nemschoff, Milton Griepp, Neil Gaiman, Peter David, Paul Levitz, and Steve Geppi.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is an organization which is dedicated to the protection of the First Amendment rights of comics as an art form and its community of creators, publishers, librarians, retailers, and readers.

The Breakfast Bunch is on their way to their first sleep away summer camp (with no technology). Guess who they run into as they get off the bus - the Lunch Ladies! The camp legend of a swamp monster seems to have come true. Everytime the swamp monster shows up another activity is cancelled. Talk about boring! Can the Lunch lady figure out who is behind the swamp monster in time?

Cool gadgets that remind me of Inspector Gadget. I read this book to a group of 5-8 year olds. They voted it their favorite of everything I read and several boys wanted to know if there were more Lunch Lady books. Definitley some humor in this series. I heard some snickers while I was reading.

According to Shelf Awareness, the latest young adult series to get the graphic treatment is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. It was announced at Comic Con that the series will be released in summer 2011 by Razorbill. The novels will be adapted by Leigh Dragoon and illustrated by Emma Vieceli.

Scanilation Site to Close Down

This Thursday scanilation site One Manga reports that they will be shutting down operations. In June, Japanese and American manga publishers changed their stance on scanilation sites and began taking an active role in removing their content from these sites (reported here in June - Japanese and US Publishers to Fight Scanilation Sites).

"It pains me to announce that this is the last week of manga reading on One Manga (!!). Manga publishers have recently changed their stance on manga scanlations and made it clear that they no longer approve of it. We have decided to abide by their wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site. The removal of content will happen gradually (so you can at least finish some of the outstanding reading you have), but we expect all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July 2010)."

While they are shutting down their manga scanilations, their forums will still be active until they try out some new ideas. They also encourage fans to fan them on their new Facebook page. For further details you can check out Anime News Network and ICv2.

Marvel Studios Greenlights Runaways Adaptation

According to ICv2, Peter Sollett, director of Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, will direct and Drew Pearce will write the screenplay. Japanese and US Publishers to Fight Scanilation Sites

According to Publishers Weekly, Japan's Digital Comic Association and US-based manga publishers are combining forces to combat scanilation sites (30 in total) such as OneManga.com and MangaFox.com. These sites began in the 70's to bring manga over to the United States when not readily available. The publishers are finally taking a stand against these sites to protect their properties. Anime New Network has similar coverage of this story.

In the three weeks since, approximately 330 tiles have been removed from MangaFox (mostly VIZ titles) and several have been removed from a similiar agregator, OneManga. Some of these titles have been removed by the scanilation creater ovver fears of legal action. Some titles, however, have found their way back on to the site.

What makes scanilations so harmful is that the creators and publishers are essentially having their work stolen from them. With the current economy, this makes a rough time even more difficult for companies. Recenly, VIZ had to cut back 40% of their staff. If we want to continue to have manga brought over to the US, we need to support the creators and publishers.

D.Gray-man (Volumes 1 through 17) by Katsura Hoshino

Set in Victorian England, we follow the adventures of Allen Walker in his search for Innocence as one of the Black Order’s Exorcists. Innocence is vital to the Black Order and the world’s survival as it is their only weapon against the Millennium Earl and his akuma. Allen is important to their cause as he was cursed and now can see the trapped soul that is used to create akuma. It is a race against time to see who will get the innocence and save or destroy the world.

This gothic story may seem familiar as there are some elements that are in other supernatural narratives. What really captures your attention is the art style and character design. This is a very visually beautiful work that grabs you and sucks you in to this alternate reality. D.Gray-man has very interesting characters, especially the main character of Allen Walker. He is a young man with a dark past. As the series progresses, his character develops and even physically changes. You will want to keep turning the pages to see all of these compelling characters and experience the fight between the Exorcists and the Millennium Earl.

While the art style has been criticized for being generic, I find the character designs to be fascinating and unique. The akuma and exorcist transformations are so interesting that I can't wait to see the next one to see what reality will be completely altered. I will admit that the backgrounds are dark and the action sequences can be difficult to decipher. I still like the alternate reality created that I keep coming back for more.

D.Gray-man was awarded the prize for best manga series 2006 at the Anime and Manga 2007 French Grand Prix. It was also awarded the manga of the year in 2006 by Webotaku.

Enjoy the world that Hoshino created in vibrant color. Experience the exciting action that you can only get a glimpse of in the manga.
